Overall Evaluation of my Production Work

At the beginning of the year, photoshop seemed very hard such that i didn't think i would get the hang of it.  I have learnt a lot from doing my production work this year. I have learnt how to use photoshop. This includes changing the image size, adding effects, using the eraser tool , inserting a background on a selected image, using layers etc. Photoshop is a very complex programme that u can do many things on. I was working without a plan at first and then i realised the importance of using a plan for my production work because Photoshop is a complex programme that you can do many things on therefore one needs a plan to avoid getting side tracked. I have also learnt the importance of theory in media. In order to attain successful production work, one must put theory in practise. For instance i learnt about Camera Angles in class. I learnt the different purposes for different camera angles. This helped me decide on what camera angles i was to use in my production work. For example i used a close up shot for one of my contents page pictures in order to place emphasis on the models face to draw attention to her flawless skin and eyebrows.

I learnt about Representation in theory and i applied to my production work. This helped me decide on what colours i was going to use for my magazine, what images as well as the content. I did this with the aim of representing young females who love R and B music as well and fashion and lifestyle. I represented these females values in the text i used as well as the colours and images. I used my knowledge of representation in the construction of my magazine of the aspects of reality such as the up coming events and cultural identities. The morden culture in which young females belong is places much value on staying 'fit' therefore i put that on the front cover with the subheading '10 Ways to stay fit' as a way of representing them so that they are instantly attracted to the magazine. This was also another way of fulfilling the stereotypes surrounding young females today. My aim was to create a magazine that is a representation of the real world of people who love R and B music i think i succeeded in doing that!

During the construction of my magazine i remembered what we learnt in class about news values! We learnt this in relation to news papers but i discovered that i could apply the knowledge to my magazine too. I used Galtung and Ruge (1973) theory of news values on what stories Ame the news and why. I used this theory to decide on what news would make into my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread. For instance i made the main exclusive story a surprise because surprise is exciting and entertaining for the readers.overall

Conclusion
I have learnt to express my creativity skills in constructing media products. I have also learnt research skills through researching about how other magazine institutions construct their media products. For instance i researched online about RnB magazines like RAP Up and Vibe in order ti get some ideas on how they attract their target audience. In addition to that i have gained application skills through applying theory onto my production work and putting it into practise. All the theory that i have learnt has contributed to the outcome of my magazine. In order to improve my skills on Photosho i had to practice a lot. I started by editing random pictures and by the time i took pictures for my production work, i was better at it. Below are some screen shot of the work that i did on Photoshop.

Double Page Spread Evaluation

Layout of dps
My double page spread is very simple. It is about an RnB singer wh has made a huge come back on the music scene. I only used one close up picture of the artist because i believe its effetcive and it makes the artist stand out more. I have used the same colours that are on the front cover and contents page to keep the house style the same. However instead of using blue for the title like i have done on my front cover and contents page, i have also added a bit of gold to make it vibrant and lively in order to match the content of the interveiw. The interveiw manly about catching up with the artists and finding out about what they have instore for their fans! The layout of my magazine is very simple. I have placed the interveiw page on one side of the dps and the main image on the other. The background is the same for both therefore it all blends in together. I made the main image lighter and the colours brighter so that it stands out. In addition to that , i also used gold to highlight the key features of the interveiw, for instance the names of other artists involved, the names of the up coming ulabum and the name of the recording label. I did this to attratc readers to read this interveiw. For instance the name of the recording company i used is well known.  Highlighting it would grab the atension of floating readers with the hope that they fall i love with the whole double page spread and purchase the next magazine issue!

Content of interveiw

The interveiw is done from the fan's point of veiw so that when the audience read it, they feel like they are involved. I represented NinA.K as a very friendly, sweet, fun, mature and bold. I reflected this in the imgae i used. i in the image she is smiling in order to come across as friendly. I reflected the sweet side of her in the interveiw where she talks about her fans in a way that they can relate to her. She talks like she knows each of them in a personal way so its very easy for my readers to love her. The interveiew is mainly about finding out what Nina.K has been up to and what she has in store for her fans. I decided on this content because its exciting for the fans and readers. The most interesting part is that the its her first magazne inetrveiw since her come back and its with my magazine! I did this to attract new readers.

Construction

I started by inserting the main image first and then added the text last. I di this because i wanted to make sure that the image is the right size and that it doesn't take up the more space than it should. I figured that if put the text first, i would end up having to change the image size a few times which would lead to the image looking crumped up. I then place main heading of the contents page secondly making sure that it doesn't ineterfere with the main image. I had three main housestyle colors so i tried all of them first to see which on looked better. I ended up using a blue heading because the name of the magazine on the front cover and the title of the contents page are both in blue and it looked nicer as well.

Because of the hustle with the lighting, i ended up using a different picture which is the one on my official contents page. This is how my contents page turned out in the end!

Contents Page Evaluation

I am very pleased with how my contents page turned out. It was very easy for me to do it because i know how effectively use photoshop now. I changed the layout a few times because it looked too simple. I then decided to use two pictures instead of one to make it more interesting. The first close up picture is a picture of a famous celebrity make up artist. She i had use a really nice camera on her to make the picture good quality. I also did a lot of editing to her face to make her skin look flawless so that when people who are interested in make up see her on the contents page, they are attracetd to read more on the article. The other picture is of the same famous artist who is on my front cover. Unfortunately the quality of the picture isn't that good comapared to the other ones because of the camera used and the changing of the image size on photoshop. I however managed to make it work because of the colours the colors my model was wearing blend i well with the house style colors. The lighting on the two pictures differs because i took thaem in different settings. The close up was taken in school and the long sht was taken indoors at home. I struggled with choosing what picture too use for my contents page because all the potensial pictures that i had took where dull due to low light. I have learned that i have to make sure the lighting is good enough because trying to increase the lighing on Photoshop will take away form the quality of the picture. Below is an example of how the lighting affated some of the pictures that i could have used.

I could have used this long shot because the colors where
really nice and they would have blended in well with
the housestyle colors but the ligting was too low!

This is how the picture turned out after i attempted to
increase the lighting on photoshop.

Contents Page Plan

I have began constructing my contents page by placing the magazine title first. I did this in order to keep the same house style the same with the front cover. I wanted to make sure that i use the same font, text colour and background in order to achieve this. The look of my contents page is very important because it attracts the readers to find out more about the contents of the whole magazine. Looking at other contents pages of similar RnB magazines, i discoverd that i need to fufill the desire of my targert audience as well create a desire in other people who might not necessarily be part of the usual readership. By creating a desire in the audience I mean building an interest in them to explore the next pages of my magazine, be fulfilled and purchase it on regular basis.

Before I started working on my contents page, a made a rough plan on paper to guide me through the whole process so that I don't stray away from the house style as well as to keep me alert of what the overall presentation that I'm working towards.

I intend in keeping my contents page very simple as it fits in well with the genre. For instance, I'm only going to use one close-up picture

In my contents page, I'm going to have four sub sections. These sub sections include
The Regulars section
This section is the first on the contents page. Its meant to be the most common section because it contains regular topics. This section is important because it involves the audience. It has a pop quiz that the audience can participate in and win something! Denis McQuil in one of his theories discovered that ever since the 1960's, the audience were far from passive when consuming media texts therefore I decided to give my readership that opportunity to be involved. I also included 'Star of the week' page and again its the audience who vote for the star of the week. I also placed a close up picture of the star of the week so that readers can spot the star as soon as they open the contents page. The Regulars section is therefore designed to involve the audience and prove that my magazine is worthy of the money they spend on it. Other RnB magazines don't really have their regular's section set out like that but I decided to challenge the existing media conversions by adding a few different things to make it more interesting without changing the traditional stereotypes of the genre.

Features
The features
section is one that I designed to give the audience something to look forward to. Features differ from week to week so no one knows what's on the features section next! The main feature of this particular edition is Nina.K the who is on the front page and double page spread. I have decided to use a different text colour on every celebrity name on my contents page to make the names stand out. RnB is all about the celebrities so when people read the magazine, they are mostly looking for their famous RnB singers.Highlighting their names in purple will save the readers the hustle of trying to find celebrities. It make sit easier for them to spot their favourite singers.

Lifestyle and fashion
RnB is very much linked to fashion and lifestyle. In addition to that most RnB magazines contain this section. I have chosen to have this same section in my magazine because it also attracts other readers who are interested in more than just RnB. I have included articles on keeping fit because staying in shape is a major thing these days.I have also posed an intriguing question about fame and happiness which is only answerable by reading that section which can only be found in my magazine.

My magazine front cover

I have now finished working on my magazine front cover. It took me a while to do it because i had to make sure that the colours, text, images and font blended in together so that i wouldnt struggle with mantaining the ovarall house style of the magazine on my contents page and double page spread.
